Toronto Specifics

What We See Most In Toronto

Toronto is not one plumbing market, it is three. A century home in Riverdale or the Junction sits on a clay sewer lateral with mature maples over it. A post-war semi has galvanized supply lines that have been closing up from the inside for forty years. A downtown condo has none of those problems and one much bigger one: everything you do is tied to a shared stack and a building manager. We work in all three, and the first question we ask is which one you are.

Clay Sewer Laterals & Tree Roots

Most of the old city was built with clay sewer pipe in short sections, and the joints between those sections are exactly where silver maple and Manitoba maple roots find their way in. If your main line backs up every spring and autumn, that is the pattern. A camera run tells you whether it is roots in a sound pipe — which jetting handles — or a collapsed section that needs digging.

Galvanized Supply & Low Pressure

Brown water on the first draw, pressure that dies when someone flushes, a shower that turns cold when the kitchen tap runs. In pre-1960 Toronto houses this is almost always galvanized steel supply pipe closing up with corrosion. Replacing it with copper or PEX is a fixed-price job we quote after seeing the run.

Basement Flooding In The East & West End

Toronto's older combined sewers surcharge in heavy rain, and the water goes where the pipe lets it. A backwater valve stops sewage being pushed back into your basement; a sump pump handles groundwater. The City subsidises both — up to $6,650 per property — and we take out the permit and meet the inspector.

Condo & Shared Stack Work

In a downtown condo the fixture is yours and the stack is the building's. We work to that line: repairs and replacements inside the unit, coordination with the property manager where a riser or shut-off is involved, and the paperwork the building needs before we are allowed in the door.

We work across the old city daily and take urgent calls the same day. For a burst pipe or an active leak, phoning is faster than the form — the call is answered by our office, not a call centre, and we book from there. Request a free estimate for anything that can wait, or call for anything that cannot.

City of Toronto Rebate

Get Up To $6,650 Back From the City

The City of Toronto's Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program reimburses homeowners for eligible flood-prevention work — including the exact backwater valve and sump pump installations we do every week. We handle the licensed installation, take out the building permit and meet the inspector ourselves — the permit is a condition of the subsidy, and it is the part most homeowners get stuck on. The rest of the paperwork is straightforward and we're happy to walk you through it.

  • Single-family, duplex, triplex or fourplex homes in Toronto
  • Work must be done by a City-licensed contractor

Simple, Honest Rates

No hidden fees — you'll always know the cost before we start.

Additional Hours
$120/hr + tax

Billed per additional hour beyond the first, in clear increments. The rate is per technician — if a job needs two of us, we tell you before we start.

Main Drain Clearing
$560+ tax

Clearing the main sewer line of a single-family home with an accessible cleanout.

  • Camera inspection$440 $220
  • Hydro-jetting$440 $220

Half price when added to the same visit — there is no second trip to pay for. You keep the recorded video and a written condition report.

Drain prices are for a single-family home with an accessible cleanout, with the camera run from the house to the property line. Priced separately: access through a pulled toilet or roof vent when there is no cleanout, sonde locating of the line, and any excavation.

The same rates apply right across Toronto — we do not price by neighbourhood. See the full 2026 price list, including camera work, hydro-jetting and the city rebates. Larger jobs — renovations, installs, backwater valves, sump pumps — are quoted as a fixed price upfront after a quick assessment, not billed hourly. Request a free estimate. Inspections are different: camera work, leak detection and pre-purchase reports are billed at the rates above, because what you get is the findings and the footage, not a quote. If you go ahead with the repair, the inspection fee comes off your invoice.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a plumber cost in Toronto?

The rate does not change by neighbourhood. A service call is $170 plus tax and covers travel plus the first hour on site; after that it is $120 an hour per technician. Clearing a main drain is $560, or $780 with a camera run in the same visit. On Toronto's older streets — Riverdale, Leslieville, the Junction — the camera is worth the extra, because a clay or cast iron line that blocks once usually has a reason, and the footage tells you whether it will do it again.

Do you work on downtown Toronto condos?

Yes. Inside the unit we handle fixtures, valves, supply lines and leaks. Anything on a shared riser or the main stack has to go through the building, so tell us the property manager's details and we will deal with the certificate of insurance and access requirements before the visit.

My main drain backs up every spring. Is that roots?

In the older parts of Toronto it usually is. Clay sewer pipe was laid in short sections, and roots enter at the joints, then catch paper and grease until the line closes. A camera run separates the two cases that matter: roots in an otherwise sound pipe, which we clear and can keep clear, and a broken or sagged section, which needs excavation. We do both.

Does the City of Toronto rebate apply to my house?

If it is a single-family, duplex, triplex or fourplex in Toronto, usually yes — up to $6,650 through the Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program, covering backwater valve, sump pump and related work. The permit and inspection are conditions of the subsidy, and both are handled by us.

Do you offer emergency plumbing service?

Yes — we take urgent calls for burst pipes, sewer backups and active leaks. Most calls in the GTA are answered same-day; call (437) 559-9778 directly for the fastest response.

What areas do you serve?

We work across the Greater Toronto Area, including Toronto, North York, Scarborough, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Etobicoke, Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville, King City and Aurora. See our full service area for details.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes — all of our plumbers are fully licensed and insured, and we carry WSIB coverage with a Certificate of Insurance available on request for property managers and commercial clients.

How much does a service call cost?

Our standard service call is $170 + tax, which covers travel and the first hour of labour. Additional hours are billed at $120 + tax. Larger jobs — renovations, installs, backwater valves, sump pumps — are quoted as a fixed price upfront, and that estimate is free. Inspections — camera work, leak detection, pre-purchase reports — are billed at the rates above, because the result is the findings and the footage rather than a quote. If you go ahead with the repair, the inspection fee comes off your invoice. See our full pricing.

Do you work with property managers and commercial buildings?

Yes — we currently maintain 10+ residential buildings across the GTA, handling everything from emergency callouts to scheduled maintenance, turnovers and drain work. Buildings on a service agreement are billed $120/hr from arrival with no service-call fee and get 24/7 callout. See our property management and commercial plumbing services.

Is there a rebate for backwater valves or sump pumps?

Often, yes. The City of Toronto offers up to $6,650 per property through its Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program, and several other GTA municipalities run their own programs. See our rebate details for your area.

About Us

Working In Toronto Since 2013

Ankor Ltd. has been working across Toronto since 2013. The company started when our founder left the firm he worked for and the residential buildings he had been maintaining asked him to keep looking after them — which is why a family-sized crew ended up servicing apartment buildings alongside houses. In Toronto that mix is exactly right: the same week can take us from a century home on the Danforth to a mechanical room downtown.

It is still a family business. Calls are answered by our office rather than a call centre, the plumber who quotes the job is the one who does it, and the price is agreed before anything is opened up. Every plumber is licensed and insured, we carry WSIB coverage, and we take out the permits and meet the inspectors on the work that needs them.

  • Fully licensed & insured plumbers
  • Transparent pricing, no surprise fees
  • Flexible scheduling, including urgent calls
  • Residential & commercial experience

Pro Tip

Stop Basement Flooding Before It Starts

Heavy rain and sewer back-ups are one of the most common — and most preventable — causes of basement flooding in the GTA. A properly installed backwater valve stops sewage from being pushed back into your home, while a sump pump clears rising groundwater before it ever reaches your floor. Together, they're the cheapest insurance policy your basement will ever have.
