How much does a plumber cost in Toronto?
Our service call is $170 plus tax and covers travel plus the first hour of labour on site. After that first hour it is $120 per hour, per technician. Most small repairs — a running toilet, a seized shut-off, a leaking trap, one blocked fixture — are finished inside the first hour, so $170 plus tax is the whole bill. Larger work such as a backwater valve, a water heater or a bathroom rough-in is quoted as one fixed price beforehand instead of hourly.
Why do some plumbers advertise a $49 or $89 call-out?
Because it is a marketing number rather than a price. It gets a technician to your door, and the actual cost of the work is presented once he is already in your basement and your afternoon is spent. We would rather publish the real rate and have you decide before anyone drives over.
Why so expensive?
Ask the people who chose cheap. We're not the cheapest and don't try to be: the price covers a licensed plumber, insurance and WSIB, materials you won't be replacing next year, and a guarantee on the work. An hour is the same for everyone. The difference is what's left after it.
How much does it cost to clear a blocked main drain?
Clearing the main sewer line of a single-family home with an accessible cleanout is $560. With a camera run in the same visit it is $780, because the camera drops from $440 to $220 when there is no second trip to pay for. A single blocked fixture — sink, tub or toilet — is the standard $170 service call, then $120/hr if it turns out to be more than a trap.
How much is a sewer camera inspection?
A full sewer main inspection is $440 on its own, or $220 for a branch line or single fixture. Booked together with a drain clearing it is $220 instead of $440. Add a sonde locate, which marks the exact position and depth of the line, and it is $560. You keep the recorded video and a written condition report either way.
Is the estimate free?
Yes. The on-site assessment that produces a fixed quote — for a backwater valve, a water heater, a renovation rough-in, a line replacement — costs nothing and carries no obligation. Inspections are different: camera work, leak detection and pre-purchase reports are billed at the hourly rates, because you are buying the findings and the footage. If you then go ahead with the repair, that fee comes off your invoice.
Do you charge hourly or a fixed price?
Repairs are hourly, because no one can honestly price a fault before opening it up. Installations and renovations are fixed — one number agreed in writing before the work starts. When a job could reasonably go either way, we tell you which basis we are using and why, before we begin.
What does a backwater valve cost after the city rebate?
The installation itself is a fixed price quoted after a free assessment, because it depends on where the line runs and how the floor has to be opened. The rebate is the bigger number: Toronto pays up to $1,600 per valve and up to $6,650 per property once a sump pump, battery backup and plumbing assessment are counted. Vaughan covers 50% of the invoiced cost up to $750, and Richmond Hill up to $1,500. A permit is required for all of them — we take it out and meet the inspector.
Do property managers pay the same rates?
Buildings and portfolios on a service agreement pay $120 per hour from arrival with no service-call fee at all, plus 24/7 callout, a written report after every visit, and COI and WSIB on file. For occasional one-off work the standard $170 service call applies the same as it does for homeowners.
